Tips for Students to Help the Lifespan of Their Laptop

Being a student is a lot of fun. You get to learn about your favorite topics and get to make lots of friends at the same time. However, no matter where you are in the world, if you are a regular student going to university, you are likely to be a bit short on cash. This means that you will want anything that you own to last as long as possible, including your laptop. An average budget laptop has a lifespan of between 2-4 years, which is fine until it decides to break down in the middle of you writing an essay piece.

There are, of course, some ways that you can make this a reality and save yourself even more money, so read on for tips on keeping your laptop ticking over for as long as possible.

Unplug When It Is Charged

It’s usually okay to keep the laptop plugged in when it is charged occasionally, but if you do this regularly, you will damage the battery. If your laptop has a battery that you cannot remove, you need to unplug your laptop when it is charged more often.

It is also worth exploring the average lifespan of any laptop you buy too. For instance, a Thinkpad X1 Carbon has a longer lifespan than most laptops, and if you can keep it in good condition, you will have the high performance of this laptop for longer.

Clean It

Dust, debris, animal hair, and food crumbs can kill any laptop, especially if these bits get under the keyboard.

So, while it is important to keep the screen of the laptop clean and the keyboard, it is worth noting that if you can comfortably get underneath the keyboard, you should aim to clean this area too. If you aren’t too sure how to open your laptop to clean it, contact a professional, or you will break it.

Keep It Cool

Nothing kills a laptop faster than an overheated battery. The batteries can become overheated via lack of external cooling and too much pressure on the RAM from high-quality games. So, to keep your laptop ticking along nicely and for as long as possible, aim to keep it cool.

In the summer, having a fan blowing on it can help and, of course, be sure that the vents underneath and around the computer are always exposed, so that the heat does not get trapped.

Upgrade

Upgrades are a great way to keep your computer working properly. They allow the programs to work faster and enable you to save space on your laptop, which will put less pressure on the CPU, and thus, the battery too.

So, whenever you get an upgrade request pop up, always be sure to book it.

Increase RAM

RAM was mentioned earlier, and one way to keep your old laptop working for longer is to increase its RAM. This can be with external RAM connected via a USB, or, if your laptop has one, a RAM slot.

RAM allows your device to run faster, be less glitchy, and prevent the machine from blue screening.
