How To Overcome Sleepiness After Lunch

How To Overcome Sleepiness After Lunch

1.    Never Skip Your Breakfast

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It keeps you energized through the day, pushing hunger pangs away and reducing the need to have a heavy lunch. Eliminating the heavy lunch this means you won’t get sleepy, thus have enough energy to push through the day.

2.    Drink Lots of Water

Water is essential for many things- keeping you awake is one of those. Drinking water also reduces the risk of overeating too. Most people confuse thirst for hunger and go for the latter instead of drinking water. Make a habit of drinking a glass of water every 2 hours to keep fit and alert.

3.    Exercise

Even the slightest form of exercise can significantly impact your overall well-being and alertness. It enables the blood to carry more oxygen and nutrients to the brain and other parts too. Take a walk outside to breathe some fresh air as you exercise.

4.    Limit Your Coffee Intake

While a cup of coffee might be enough to stimulate your mind and trigger wakefulness, some of us end up drinking five of these, all in an attempt to stay alert. They, however, end up with a rather undesired result; they start feeling sleepy a few moments later. One of the reasons for this is that only small amounts of coffee will stimulate wakefulness and release adrenaline, while too much of these will only have a counter-effect. It would also be advisable to restrict your caffeine intake to morning hours and never later in the evening. Drinking coffee in the evening could affect your ability to sleep at night.

5.    Consider A Lunch Nap

While not everyone can afford a power nap in the afternoon, some companies encourage their employees to. Most of these companies have quiet rooms that employees can use to rest even for 20 minutes without any disruptions. You could also consider taking a nap on your desk as well. However, you might want to keep the naps less than 30 minutes, as anything more than this will only make your situation worse.

6.    Consider Light Snacks for Lunch

Don’t give in to the idea of skipping lunch just to avoid sleepiness. Having smaller portions of food or snacks at lunchtime is one of the best ways to stay energized without drifting to slumber mode. Just make sure you have a heavy breakfast to avoid the temptation of overeating during lunchtime.

7.         Get Enough Sleep
